Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers: The Riverside Owner’s Guide
Oldcastle driveway pavers and retaining wall block in Riverside typically fail at the edges first, not the middle. Most homeowners call us when a paver has cracked, sunk, or shifted out of alignment after a few years of Riverside heat and occasional heavy rain. The typical installed repair or replacement runs $350 to $2,800 depending on how much of the bed needs to be re-leveled and how many units have to be matched.
The symptom picture is usually the same: a paver that’s suddenly an inch lower than its neighbor, a hairline crack running through a full-color unit, or a section of border that’s pushed outward and won’t sit tight against the soldier course. Sometimes the problem starts underneath, in the base material, not in the paver itself. That’s the part most people miss until the second paver drops.
Bradford Remodeling Co Riverside is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Oldcastle, but we work with their products every week and we keep common replacement units and compatible materials ready to go for Riverside jobs.
Which Oldcastle Models This Applies To

Oldcastle’s hardscape line covers a lot of ground, but in Riverside we mostly see three families of product: the interlocking concrete pavers (often sold through their Belgard catalog), the segmental retaining wall block, and the precast concrete edging and border units. The paver models break down further into the standard 60mm pedestrian pavers and the 80mm units rated for driveway traffic. That thickness difference matters more than almost anything else on a driveway job.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: Oldcastle has changed paver profiles and color lots over the years. A paver you bought in 2018 may not match the paver being produced today, even under the same product name. Colors shift slightly from lot to lot, and that’s before the Riverside sun fades the existing units. We always blend from the existing pavement outward rather than patching with a single new unit. It looks wrong otherwise.
For most driveway applications, you want the 80mm thickness, not the 60mm. The 60mm paver is fine for a patio or walkway, but the weight of a truck or SUV over a poorly placed 60mm unit is a crack waiting to happen. Check the underside of the paver. The thickness is usually stamped or embossed there, along with the product line name. If the marking is gone, measure the broken paver with a tape. That’s your starting point for any quote.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Oldcastle’s own units are concrete, and there are compatible units made by other manufacturers that will fit the same grid pattern. The issue is never the size. The issue is the color and the texture. Aftermarket units in the same nominal size will sit flat, but the face finish won’t match the existing texture. We recommend pulling a good paver from an area you’re going to redo and using that as the matching standard, then buying the closest production lot available.

Signs Your Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Uneven surface or tripping lip. One paver sits higher than its neighbor, usually because the sand bed underneath has washed out or compacted unevenly. Catch this early and it’s a re-level job. Wait too long and the paver edges start chipping against each other.
- Hairline cracks across the face. Riverside’s sun dries the concrete and the temperature swings cause expansion and contraction. A crack that runs through a unit means the paver has lost its structural bite. It will continue to spread until it breaks into pieces.
- Sunken section or dip in the driveway. This points to the base material failing, not the paver itself. Water has found a way in and the base is eroding from underneath. You can patch the paver, but until you fix the drainage or re-compact the base, the dip returns.
- Pavers that rock or shift when you step on them. A paver that moves under foot means the sand joint has failed and the paver is no longer locked into the field. Walking on it accelerates the damage and wears the edges down.
- Border or soldier course pushing outward. The edge restraint has failed, and the entire field is slowly creeping toward the low side. You’ll see a widening gap between the border course and the rest of the driveway. That gap lets water in, which accelerates everything else.
None of these symptoms go away on their own. They get worse slowly, then all at once when the first Riverside storm hits and the water moves the base material out from under the pavers.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a paver repair or section replacement in Riverside, you’re looking at roughly $350 to $1,500 for a small area, and $1,200 to $2,800 for a larger driveway section that needs base re-compaction and new paver installation. A full paver driveway replacement runs $7,000 to $18,000 depending on square footage, access, and whether the base can be salvaged or has to be dug out and rebuilt.
Every Bradford quote is a written number before any work starts. You’ll see the line items: paver material cost per unit, sand and base replacement by the cubic yard, labor at the actual hours we expect, and disposal. If the job requires new edge restraint or drainage correction, that’s listed too. We don’t have a different number waiting at the door.
The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the completed repair or replacement for a full year. If a paver cracks, sinks, or shifts inside that window, we come back and correct it at no charge. That’s in writing, signed, in your hand at close.
DIY or Call Us?
Pavers are not a high-tension safety risk like garage springs or electrical panels, but the work is easy to do wrong. What an owner can safely check: clear debris from the joints, note where water pools, check for cracked units, and measure the thickness of a broken paver. That information helps us give you a straight number over the phone.
Where DIY goes wrong is the base. If you lift a paver, and the base material underneath is soft, wet, or has holes, any paver you drop back in will fail the same way. Compacted base and proper sand bedding are the whole job. We also see homeowners break more pavers trying to seat them with a rubber mallet and no flex under the unit.
If the damage is one or two pavers and the base is firm, you can try it. If the bed has moved, call us at (424) 567-8472 and we’ll come take a look. The estimate is free.
FAQs

Expect 20 to 30 years from the pavers themselves, but the sand joints and base material usually need attention around the 10- to 15-year mark in Riverside’s dry heat. The sun fades color and the fine sand between units erodes. If you stay on joint maintenance and keep water from undermining the base, the pavers hold up for decades. Call (424) 567-8472 and we’ll tell you honestly whether your driveway is at repairable stage or replacement stage.
A cracked paver cannot be structurally repaired. Concrete patch or epoxy will fill the crack cosmetically, but the unit loses its load-bearing integrity and the crack returns. Spalling or chipped edges can sometimes be smoothed and lived with, but a full crack through the unit means replacement.
Most small repairs take half a day to a full day on site, plus a few days for any new base material to settle before we lock the pavers back in. A section replacement with base re-compaction is usually two to three working days. We’ll give you the sequence in the written quote so you know exactly what days we’re on site.
We keep common 60mm and 80mm interlocking concrete pavers on hand for immediate Riverside repairs, and we source Oldcastle-compatible units directly from the same supply yards we use for full driveway builds. For unusual colors or discontinued profiles, we match from the best available lot and blend from the existing field. Give us the paver thickness and a photo, and we’ll tell you what’s available before you spend a dollar.
