James Hardie Fence Installation: The Riverside Owner’s Guide
James Hardie fence installation in Riverside typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 for a complete section replacement or new run, including HardiePanel or HardiePlank siding material, framing, and finish work. We keep James Hardie fiber cement panels and trim in stock for fence applications, so most jobs are scheduled within a week of the written estimate. Homeowners usually find us after a fence board has cracked, swollen at the bottom edge, or started pulling away from the post system that was never flashed correctly in the first place.
The failure almost always traces back to ground contact or sprinkler overspray. Fiber cement is tough, but it’s not rot-proof when it sits in standing water or gets hit by irrigation every morning. In Riverside’s dry heat, the material moves. It expands, contracts, and if it was installed tight against a post with no gap, something has to give. Usually it’s the board.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

We install and repair fences built with HardiePanel vertical siding (4×8 and 4×10 sheets) and HardiePlank lap siding (5/16″ and 1/4″ thickness) used as fence cladding. Both products share the same fiber cement composition, but panel-based fences fail differently than plank-based ones. Panels crack at fastener points. Planks cup when the back side gets moisture and the front side bakes in Riverside sun.
Compatibility matters more than most suppliers admit. James Hardie changed fastener requirements over the years, and older installations often used roofing nails instead of the specified corrosion-resistant siding nails. We match the current product generation to what’s already on the fence. If your existing boards are delaminating at the edges, you’re looking at an older manufacturing run, and we’ll specify the current equivalent rather than trying to patch a product that’s already failed once. Bradford Remodeling Co Riverside is an independent contractor; we’re not a James Hardie dealer or affiliate, which means our recommendation is about what holds up, not what moves a pallet.

Signs Your James Hardie Fence Installation Is Failing
- Bottom-edge swelling or crumbling. This is ground contact or splash-back from hardscape. Fiber cement wicks moisture, and once the bottom inch goes soft, the board loses its structural bite on the framing behind it.
- Fastener heads rusting through the face. Wrong nails were used. James Hardie specifies hot-dipped galvanized or stainless. Electroplated nails rust out in a few Riverside seasons and the board loosens.
- Hairline vertical cracks running from the top rail. The material was installed without the required expansion gap. Fiber cement is stiff. When the post system moves, the board can’t, so it cracks.
- Chalky surface with exposed fibers. The factory finish has weathered past its service life. Hardie’s baked-on ColorPlus finish holds up, but a fence that’s been sand-scoured by Santa Ana winds for a decade will eventually show fiber.
- Fence leaning at the post line. This one isn’t the Hardie material at all. The post footing failed, usually because it was set shallow or the concrete collar was undersized. The panels just go along for the ride.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Riverside, a full James Hardie fence installation runs $3,500 to $9,000 installed. On the low end, you’re replacing a single run of panels on existing sound posts, maybe 40 to 60 linear feet. On the high end, we’re digging new post holes, pouring footings to code, reframing, and cladding both sides of a longer run.
| Scope | Riverside Price Range |
|---|---|
| Panel replacement on existing framing (per section, 8 ft) | $350 – $700 |
| New James Hardie fence, basic 50 ft run, one side clad | $3,500 – $5,500 |
| New James Hardie fence, 100+ ft, both sides clad, new footings | $6,000 – $9,000 |
| Post replacement with proper concrete footing (per post) | $250 – $450 |
Every quote is a written line-item price before work starts. No numbers move at the door. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation for a full year: if anything we installed fails inside that window, we come back and correct it at no charge. That’s in writing, on the estimate and on the final invoice. Curtis Lane signs both.
DIY or Call Us?
You can inspect the fence safely. Walk the line, look at the bottom edges, check for rust at fastener heads, and note any boards that sound hollow when tapped. That’s all useful information to have when you call us. What you shouldn’t do is pull boards off a fence that’s already leaning. Once you remove cladding from a compromised post system, you’ve changed the load path, and a stiff panel under tension can come down hard. Fiber cement sheets are heavy. A 4×8 HardiePanel weighs around 70 pounds, and it doesn’t flex when it falls.
If the posts are sound and it’s a single cracked board, a careful homeowner with the right fasteners and a pair of helpers can swap it. If the post system has moved, or you’re looking at bottom-edge failure across multiple boards, call (424) 567-8472. We’ll assess the framing before we ever quote you a panel replacement, because putting new Hardie on bad posts is just scheduling a second failure.
FAQs

A properly installed James Hardie fence lasts 25 to 30 years in Riverside’s climate before the cladding needs replacement. The posts and framing fail first if footings were undersized or sprinklers saturate the base. The Hardie material itself, kept off the ground and flashed correctly, has a service life that outlasts most wood fences two to one.
In most cases, no. Fiber cement doesn’t patch cleanly, and a repaired crack will telegraph through paint within a year. We replace the individual board or panel sheet, color-matched to the existing finish where possible. Call (424) 567-8472 and we’ll tell you straight whether it’s a board swap or a panel swap.
A single section replacement takes one day on site. A full fence run with new footings takes two to four days, depending on linear footage and access. Concrete needs a day to cure before we hang panels, and we don’t rush that step in Riverside’s summer heat. The schedule is in the written estimate before we start.
We keep the common HardiePanel and HardiePlank profiles in stock for Riverside jobs, along with the correct galvanized fasteners and flashing. Specialty colors are ordered per project with a 7 to 10 day lead time. The same trailer carries materials for our other brand work, including KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone specifications, so we’re not running to the supply house mid-job.
