Sakrete Driveway & Pavers: The Riverside Owner’s Guide
Sakrete driveway and paver work in Riverside typically runs $7,000 to $18,000 installed, depending on square footage, paver type, and what’s happening under the surface. We stock Sakrete bagged concrete, polymeric sand, and paver base on our trucks, so most jobs don’t wait on material runs. What usually brings a homeowner to this page is a driveway or paver section that’s settled, cracked, or heaved – and they want to know whether they’re looking at a repair or a full replace before they spend another dollar on it.
The honest answer is that it depends on what’s underneath. In Riverside, with our clay-heavy soils and summer heat that hits 100+ degrees, substrate failure shows up faster than most people expect. A paver that’s sunk two inches in March might have been fine in November. The concrete doesn’t care what you budgeted. What matters is whether the base is still doing its job.
Bradford Remodeling Co Riverside is an independent contractor. We’re not affiliated with Sakrete, but we install with their products daily and we know their mix specs, cure times, and what happens when the base was never compacted right in the first place.
Which Sakrete Models This Applies To

Sakrete isn’t like a window brand with model numbers. What matters for driveway and paver work is the product line and the application. The main ones we work with in Riverside:
- Sakrete High-Strength Concrete Mix (4,000 PSI) – the standard for driveway slabs, walkways, and paver setting beds where you need load-bearing strength. This is what we pour for aprons and driveway extensions.
- Sakrete Sand Mix / Mortar Mix – used for bedding pavers when you’re setting them on a concrete base rather than compacted aggregate. Sand mix gives you that tighter bond for thin-set paver applications.
- Sakrete Paver Set – a polymer-modified mortar made specifically for paver installation. If your paver job was done with standard mortar and it’s failing, this is often the fix.
- Sakrete PermaSand – polymeric sand for paver joints. This is the product that fails most often when it’s installed wrong, and it’s a Riverside-specific problem.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know: PermaSand has to go into joints that are dry and free of dust, and it has to be activated with the right amount of water. Too much water and the polymers wash out before they set. Too little and the sand stays loose. In Riverside’s dry heat, installers sometimes rush this step because the surface looks ready. It isn’t. We check moisture content with a meter before we open a single bag.
OEM versus aftermarket for Sakrete products really comes down to the bag. There are regional concrete brands that mix to similar specs, but we don’t substitute them. Sakrete’s batch consistency is what we spec, and when a homeowner is paying for a paver driveway that should last 25 years, saving $3 a bag on an unknown mix isn’t a trade-off we’ll make on their behalf. Curtis Lane has pulled out the current California Building Code mid-bid more than once when a homeowner asks why we won’t cut corners on base depth.

Signs Your Sakrete Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Settled or sunken pavers (often near the driveway edge or by the garage apron). This is almost always a base failure, not a paver failure. Riverside’s clay soil expands and contracts with moisture, and if the base wasn’t compacted in lifts, the ground gives way underneath over time.
- Weeds or ants pushing up through the joints. That means the polymeric sand has failed or was never properly installed. Sakrete PermaSand is designed to resist weed growth and insect intrusion, but only when it’s activated correctly and the base is stable beneath it.
- Cracks running in a straight line across a concrete driveway. Straight-line cracks usually mean the slab was poured too thin for the load or there’s no control joint where there should be. Riverside’s temperature swings put a lot of expansion stress on a slab, and concrete will find the weak point.
- White, chalky residue blooming on the paver surface. That’s efflorescence, which happens when water moves through the pavers and brings minerals up to the surface. It’s more common in Riverside because our irrigation cycles alternate between soaked and bone-dry, and that cycling pulls minerals upward.
- Pavers that rock or shift when you step on them. Loose bedding. Some movement is normal in the first week after install, but if it’s still happening six months in, the bedding layer was too thick, too thin, or never properly screeded.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In Riverside, a full paver driveway installation runs $7,000 to $18,000. A concrete driveway install is $4,500 to $12,000. Driveway replacement lands between $5,000 and $14,000, and paver patio work runs $3,500 to $11,000. Those aren’t guesses – they’re the numbers we put in writing before a single bag of Sakrete gets opened.
The spread comes down to three things: square footage, access, and what’s underneath. A 400-square-foot paver driveway with good access and stable subgrade sits at the low end. A 900-square-foot driveway with a slope, a retaining wall, and clay that needs over-excavation sits at the high end. Trees and roots near the drive always push the number up because we have to dig deeper and sometimes install root barriers.
What’s included in our price: demolition and haul-off of the old surface, excavation and base prep, the Sakrete products spec’d for the job, installation, joint sand, edge restraint, and a written scope of work. Every completed project carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the surface fails – pavers settle, concrete cracks at the joints, sand washes out – inside that first year, we come back and correct it at no charge. That’s The Garrison Standard, and it’s in writing before we start.
DIY or Call Us?
There are things a homeowner can safely check before calling anyone. Walk the surface with a level. Note where it’s dipped. Check the joints for sand loss. Look at where water pools after rain or irrigation. That information helps us give you a straight number over the phone instead of a vague range.
What we’d never recommend doing yourself: pulling up pavers to re-level a section without fixing the base underneath, re-sanding joints with the wrong product, or pouring a concrete patch on a driveway that’s actively moving. You’ll spend a weekend and a few hundred dollars to make the problem invisible for six months. Then it comes back, worse, because the base was never addressed. If the base has failed, the repair is excavation and recompaction – and that’s not a shovel-and-wheelbarrow job. It’s equipment, it’s depth, and it’s a crew who knows what they’re looking at when they open the ground.
Call (424) 567-8472 and we’ll walk the site, give you a written scope, and tell you exactly what’s under the surface before we quote a number. Straight number, real scope, no surprises at the final walk.
FAQs

A properly installed Sakrete paver driveway with a compacted base should last 25 years in Riverside before the pavers themselves need replacement. The base, if done correctly with the right depth of aggregate and compaction, can outlast the pavers. What shortens that lifespan here is water – irrigation overspray, poor drainage, and our clay soil holding moisture against the base. Fix the drainage and the driveway holds.
If your driveway is failing before year 10, the base was almost certainly the problem, not the Sakrete materials. Call (424) 567-8472 and we’ll tell you what we’re seeing.
Sometimes. Localized paver settling, sand loss, and efflorescence can be repaired without replacing the whole surface. But if the base has failed across the majority of the driveway – you can usually tell because it’s settling in multiple spots or the surface has a wave to it – a repair just delays the replacement. We’ll tell you straight which one you’re looking at, and we’ll put the reasoning in writing. Call (424) 567-8472 for an exact assessment.
A typical Riverside paver driveway replacement takes 3 to 5 working days from demolition to final compaction and sanding. Larger driveways with drainage work or base over-excavation can run 7 to 10 days. We sequence the job so materials, excavation, and install happen in order, which is why our punch list gets closed before we call the project done. Call (424) 567-8472 for a timeline on your specific driveway.
Yes. We stock Sakrete High-Strength Concrete Mix, Paver Set, and PermaSand as standard on our Riverside jobs, plus base aggregate and edge restraint. That means we don’t send a runner to the supply yard mid-job for the basics. If your project needs a specialty Sakrete product we don’t keep on hand, we’ll have it on site before the day we need it. Call (424) 567-8472 and we’ll confirm what’s needed.
